“It wasn’t me!” Kunal said, shuddering. The temperature in the cell was set to 30 degrees Celsius, and Kunal shook as if he had just been rescued from drowning in an icy ocean.

A large metallic ring stretched around his head. It connected to a computer nearby, which analyzed the data from his brain. So far, the results were too vague for the System to decipher anything. Just shadows and shapes.

“Psycho scans don’t lie.” Anurag said, pulling a chair and sitting before the frozen suspect.

“Besides, the reports say you willingly surrendered.” Razia was flicking in the air to skim through the report projecting from her spectacles.

“I am trying to explain, but this bastard wouldn’t let–”

A spark crackled from the ring around Kunal’s head, who screamed a bone-chilling scream. Anurag increased the current with a slight tilt of his head, to speed up the scanning.

“Stop it!”

“Standard procedure. You know that. He won’t say anything and we are short on time.”

Razia went to the computer and pressed the power button.

“Hey! Just awesome. Now we have to gather his data again. See, I knew this was a bad decision. You need more time. Maybe another round of simulations training.”

“Oh, I’m ready. I’m just not sadistic or desensitized like most of you here. With so much increase in machine interaction in the society, we are forgetting we are not senseless like them. Humans feel pain.” She balled her fists. “What you did to him… it’s just terrible.” Razia narrowed her eyes. “And this is what Utopia is supposed to be? A perfect world? My ass.”

“Jeez, calm down. He’s the guy who killed four people, not me.”

“It’s not proven yet.” She went to Kunal, throwing a nasty look at Anurag who just sat there, a hand on his forehead, muttering something under his breath about her incompetence.

Razia rolled her eyes. Great, and I thought we would finally be working together like the good old times.

Razia pulled a chair closer to Kunal. She pressed a button. The ring split into two semi-circles that opened up.

Kunal touched the nasty burn marks the ring had left on his skin. Hot blood poured down his ears. Razia winced just by looking at those ugly injuries.

“I swear it wasn’t me,” kunal said, crying.

“Explain.”

Kunal looked below at the handcuffs that dug into his skin. “I never made any confession, I just begged to be brought here, in the safety of the police station, away from that monster. That monster made me do it.” With a quick jerk, his head faced Razia again. His eyes widened and Razia saw pure fear leaping out. “Not the killing, no. He brought me the bodies. Said if I didn’t act according to his directions, he will kill my daughter.” Kunal joined his arms. “Please save her. He has had her for months.”

Razia flinched. She looked over her shoulder. “Track his daughter. Send men.”

“It’s just a story, Razia. Tell me, why is he bringing this up now when he could have alerted the System months ago.”

“We weren’t
